Jorge and his brother Jhon Javier inherited El Jardin from their father 13 years ago. The farm is located in the highlands of Planadas, Tolima and is surrounded by beautiful flora, fauna and a view of mountains. The farm name translates to ‘Garden’ and is inspired by all this natural beauty that surrounds them.
Initially, they sold wet coffee to the conventional market but one day there were heavy rains that blocked the road and prevented them from going in to town to sell the coffee. Their only option was to dry the coffee on the farm. Since this was their first time undertaking drying on El Jardin, out of curiosity Jorge decided to take the lot to the co-op Asopep. He was surprised and delighted to learn that the coffee scored 87 points.
“I learned a valuable lesson this day, never again to give away my coffee to the conventional market. That day I learned about the potential of my product and that was when I started focusing on producing specialty coffee.” says Jorge. As his involvement with the cooperative grew, he met Caravela (through whom we have sourced this coffee). Since then, he has learned about different processes, anaerobics, drying naturals, and he has been able to implement many of these on the farm. “Producing specialty coffee and having a relationship with Caravela, has given an aggregated value to my product, better prices, better payment structure, technical assistance, and more recognition.” said Jorge.
