El Palmo is a family farm, Karen Mendoza lives there with her parents and she grew up learning about coffee and helping with production work. Now, she and her brothers share the farm work between themselves. For the past six years she has been focussed on coffee production and fully immersed in the operations of the farm. Two years ago they set their sights on specialty coffee, improving quality was their goal. The switch to specialty processing is a huge undertaking, the family have accumulated much knowledge around process, fermentation and drying coffee. Along with the improved quality came higher earnings directly affecting the quality of life for her parents and the condition of the house they live in.
Karen comments that she is particularly proud of their attention to the native flora and fauna. They are implementing sustainable practices on the farm to further protect their surrounding environment.
