In the northern highlands of Cajamarca, Peru, you’ll find Los Cedros, the farm of Jose Mejía Paico. Jose grew up helping on his parents’ land, where coffee trees were scattered amongst cattle paddocks. It was here that his passion began, and over two decades later, he’s still at it—now with more than 23 years of experience and his own thriving farm.
Three years ago, Jose shifted to specialty coffee. That change marked a turning point: careful fertilisation, the renovation of older trees, and more selective harvesting. With the help of his wife and two children, he’s been able to raise cup quality, improve the farm’s infrastructure, and—most importantly—send his kids to school.
Specialty coffee has also brought recognition: “Since I produce specialty coffee, I am recognised for my efforts, and this makes me proud,” Jose says. Looking ahead, his focus is on improving his wet mill and drying beds, alongside continuing to replant older trees, ensuring the farm stays productive for years to come.
